Mainstream-Media, pushers from the shadows in the service of terror

Media in the service of terror is the latest release from Dominick Fernow under alias Vatican Shadow. Its a progressive, emotive techno album which takes on classic beats, pushing them to their limit with racing tempos and excitable synths. It feels though it builds on a narrative, telling the story of the modern day status quo, highlighting the issues with powerful vibrations. It is hard to overlook the political connotations and I feel they really add to the power of this record.

Starting off with Ziad Jarrah studied mathematics, a slow paced atmospheric track with thunderous crashes echoing around. A reverby organ plays in the background painting the scene of a lone figure deep in study of mathematics somewhere in the fringes of society.

More of the same  features pumping drums supplemented with lo-fi distorted claps and a teasingly simple synth which keeps you peering over the edge looking for more. This is such a powerful track for me, and potentially techno track of the year, check it out below:

Take vows is a boomy slow paced thumper which literally sounds like the thudding heart beat of a, to be initiated, assailant echoing around an airy space. Gradually building energy with more drums and a harsh acid synth to a subtle euphoria coming in the last minute, as though the vows have just been said and endorphins are flowing. Unfortunately the flow is completely broken in the album with a harsh finish an contrasting following track.

Where there is money there is unforgiveness features some floaty synths, and noisy mechanical high pitched drums with very little low end and lots of distortion. It is short an feels more like a skit then a track, for me serving only to break the momentum.

Interrogation mosaic pierces the silence with deep, reverberating synths leaving you in a constant state of flux and anticipation, but again lets it down loosely, Really playing on the constant perpetual fear the media push, with little or no end product. Following this are remixes of take vows and more of the same.

Media in the service of terror is an atmospheric techno record with deep feelings and emotion, leaving the listener in a disorientated state of mind. It is definitely physiological and gets in your head, a skill full homage to both the media and terrorism which operate in a similar headspace.

Trouble Vision – Dark sky, Seven Davis Jr, Love Glove, Daniel Wang @ Corsica Studios

This was my first night at Corsica Studios, making the trip mainly to see Dark Sky who are one of my favourite up an coming acts in the UK bass scene,  really on it with their debut album imagin. They put on a solid 3hr set  and didn’t disapoint!

That being said, I was absolutely blown away by Love Glove in Room 2, a vinyl only DJ crew bringing the disco boogie soul jams.  I am indebted to Trouble Vision for putting these guys on the bill, and introducing me to something special. They had the room bumping with love, positive vibes an cutting shapes; I’m so stoked for these guys, cant’t wait to catch them again.  They were for me the highlight of the night, getting my blood pumping an moves  flowing as soon as I walked into the club.

Big up Corsica crowd

Which brings me onto Corsica Studios itself, a truly ‘underground’ club with no frills an honest service from everything to the music acts, door policy and the bar. They know people are coming there for the great music an keep that at the focus of the club, not letting anything else get in the way. It consists of two rooms, room one a nice intimate space with a stage an bar round the corner, with room two round the corner, being slightly smaller, both powered by the funktion one system. More than enough to keep both rooms pumped!!!

The club is a great size, large enough to host a good variety of sounds, yet small enough to really incubate the feel good vibe throughout the crowd. Corsica Studios is a proper club and definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already been, Kompakt records are hosting what looks to be an epic night on the 20th March ft Weval (live) the Dutch due fresh on the scene for their first UK show.
